Abuela de Miami received a wonderful invitation to attend a private, VIP, one of a kind, special preview, pre-opening, five course meal at the new Bonefish Grill in Aventura.  On the eve of its grand opening, Abuela de Miami, along with a number of other local influencers, was warmly received by the bright, young staff whose eagerness and enthusiasm was refreshing and contagious.  Abuela de Miami loves and rewards excellent customer service so I had to immediately take a “selfie” with this memorable crew and one of the owners.

We were received with signature cocktails like the Wild Orchid Hawaiian Martini which was exquisitely prepared and then were led into one of the two beautiful private dining areas to start our gastronomic experience. Each course from the appetizers to the desserts was accompanied by a special wine or a signature cocktail.  Scrumptious tuna street tacos were accompanied by a Chandon rosé; a cilantro lime salad was paired with a Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand; a surf & turf mixed grill was enhanced by the exceptional Conundrum Red Blend from California.  Talk about smooth, melt in your mouth flavor.  We didn’t just have one dessert, we had two!  The strawberry shortcake with fresh berries and real whipped cream was then followed by the new do it yourself donuts from the bar menu with the option to fill the donuts with caramel or chocolate.  The evening was topped off by a one of a kind espresso martini with house made vanilla vodka, which was amazing and definitely gave you a jolt of energy!

This truly was a memorable night and the new friends I made were a special bonus! Miami Al Maximo is definitely placing this location on its summer production list.  Bonefish Grill – Aventura is a must visit when you want to have a delicious contemporary American meal in a sophisticated yet casual environment with great service.  They are located at 18713 Biscayne Boulevard and although reservations are not required I would definitely take advantage of their online reservation system so that you have a table ready and waiting.  Long lines are sure to form at this location as soon as the word is out that they are open for business.  For more information and reservations go to https://www.bonefishgrill.com/Aventura and make sure to follow them on twitter @bonefishgrill.

P.S.  Each of us was given a bottle of Conundrum Red Blend from California to enjoy at home! Yay!!

Provecho! from your favorite.

Abuela de Miami had the awesome experience of attending the PGA Executive Women’s Day at the Cadillac Championship, Trump National Doral on March 2, 2015.

Now in its fourth year, the event was sponsored by Astellas and the setting was the elegant Crystal Ballroom at the Trump National Doral.  I was invited as part of the influencer group of South Florida Bloggin’ Mamas and from start to finish we received VIP treatment.  The PGA Executive Women’s Day succeeded in creating an unforgettable experience for the participants, and from valet parking, special gifts, delicious lunch, networking time, special tour and event photos, the attention to detail was evident.

My favorite part was listening and interacting with the panel of speakers at the event.  These are women who have succeeded in their fields and are now giving back and empowering other women for success.  Moderated by Local 10 anchor, Kristi Krueger, the real life experience, practical advice and accessibility shared and demonstrated by each of these exceptional women was invaluable and paid dividends on the investment of a few hours of my day.  The Power Panel discussion was led by Michelle Beauchamp, USA Brand Director for Grey Goose & Bacardi, Sonya Canas, Senior Vice President/Commercial Banking Manager of Mercantil CommerceBank, and Dondra Ritzenthaler, Senior Vice President of Sales & Trade at Celebrity Cruises.  Keynote speaker Carla Harris, Vice Chairman, Global Wealth Management, Managing Director & Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley rounded out the event with wisdom from years of experience:  “if you consider yourself a leader in the 21st century you must be comfortable taking risks!”

I returned over the weekend to watch the tournament and I have to give an honorable mention to Imagination Playground Kid’s Zone located at the 18th Hole Fan Zone.  What a great idea and a wonderful experience for the children who attended the event!  The playground was composed of large shaped blocks which included cubes, cylinders, cogs and allowed the kid to create whatever they wanted and as far as their imagination would take them.  Imagination Playground manufactures these innovative playgrounds which encourage creativity, camaraderie and collaboration among the children.  You can get more information at http://www.imaginationplayground.com.

Make sure to be on the lookout for the PGA Tour’s Women’s Executive Day in your part of the country, and definitely plan on attending next year’s event in the south Florida area.  For more information you can visit their website at: www.pgatour.com/woman.html.  You can also follow them on their social media platforms at:

Abuela de Miami Makes Carnitas al horno!
#SabiosDelSabor #PorkTeInspira

Abuela de Miami had to get in on the #PorkTeInspira #SabiosDelSabor contest by sharing a picture of a favorite pork dish: Carnitas al Horno! #AbueloDeMiami loves tacos de carnitas, but I want to keep them as healthy as possible for him so I skip the traditional frying method and I roast the pork shoulder instead. Although using the roasting method takes longer, the preparation is easier and more importantly most of the fat is rendered out. I save the rendered fat and use it to prepare refried beans or other recipes that call for tasty fat! Here is the recipe:

Carnitas Al Horno

Ingredients
3 – 4 pounds of #Pork shoulder cut into four or five large chunks
4 Tablespoons Goya Adobo Sin Pimienta (Adobo without pepper)
2 Tablespoons olive oil
5 Cloves of garlic
1 Onion Sliced
½ Orange – juiced
Corn tortillas
Coarsely chopped cilantro
Coarsely chopped onions
Lime wedges
Salsa

Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 375º
2. Season the pork pieces with Goya Adobo, which you can find in the Hispanic section of your supermarket. If not then make a spice blend with a base of salt and garlic powder. Get creative!
3. Add olive oil to a Dutch oven (deep pan with lid that goes from stove to oven) and heat to medium high heat on the stove
4. Add the pork sections and sear on all sides. This should take about 10 minutes. Turn off burner
5. Add the garlic, onion and pour the orange juice over the meat. Add the orange peel if you like
6. Cover the Dutch oven with foil and then place the lid on the pan
7. Place the Dutch oven in the oven at 375º for an hour, then lower the temperature to 240º for two hours
8. After three hours remove the pan from the oven and gently take the meat out of the pan and place it on a plate to rest and drain for twenty minutes. Pull apart meat to assemble tacos
9. Warm up corn tortillas and assemble the tacos adding cilantro and onions; sprinkle with lime and add your salsa
10. EAT!

Mexicans only place onions, cilantro and salsa on our tacos de carnitas because we expect the flavor of the meat to be so delicious and succulent that we don’t want anything to cover it up! I typically serve the tacos with Mexican coleslaw (shredded cabbage, cucumber, onion, cilantro, salt, lime juice) on the side. The acidity of the salad helps cut through the richness of the meat. You can add toppings to your liking and serve with your favorite side dish.

Thank you to Latina Mom Bloggers for letting us know about this contest. Get in on the fun and share a picture of your favorite pork recipe using the hashtag #SabiosDelSabor on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win a VIP getaway for two to Miami! Go to http://www.porkteinspira.com/dalailomo for more information.

And if you try my recipe let me know how it comes out!

Love,
Abuela de Miami

“Trump”isms for Success

Abuela de Miami had the privilege of attending the Web,com Small Business Summit recently held at the Trump National Hotel in Doral, Florida during the Cadillac Championship. Web.com Tour hosted hundreds of small business owners in the south Florida area at the luxury resort and were given special VIP treatment that started with Preferred Parking, luxury shuttles, tickets to the golf championship, exquisite bites at the welcoming reception, an evening reception at the International Club on the 18th Hole aaaannnnddd…the Donald himself made an appearance and shared some of the wisdom that has made him successful.

1. You have to have “tremendous passion” for whatever it is you are doing.
– If you don’t have passion it’s never going to happen.
– You have to love what you do
– If you love what you do it is never really work
– “My vacation is my work” – Donald Trump

2. You have to develop the ability to never quit or give up.
– “People who quit are frickin losers” – Donald Trump
– When he experienced financial difficulty in the 90’s he came up with a slogan to motivate himself, “Survive til ’95”

3. Everybody makes mistakes; you must learn from your mistakes
– Use the laws of the country to your advantage, i.e. bankruptcy laws

4. Opportunity is the greatest when things aren’t going well
– The economy is going to get worse, there are some great deals available, this is a great time to have cash so you can buy

5. Momentum: many people don’t understand the word ‘momentum’. When you lose your momentum your business will suffer. Work to maintain your momentum

6. Pressure: many people cannot handle pressure.
– If you cannot handle pressure you should know that about yourself
– You have to understand what it is that makes people tick, but most importantly you have to know what makes you tick.

7. You never know what’s going to happen. Sometimes you have to take risks.
– You have to have great confidence
– You have to have great knowledge
– But you have to be willing to take risks

8. “One thing I learned about life: it’s not about money”
– Happiness is what it’s all about. Some of the richest people are mean, unhappy
– You need to do what makes you happy
– Having a family, a great life, real relationships supersede tremendous success!

Thank you Donald! And thank you Web.com for the special treat! #SmallBizSummit

One of Abuela de Miami’s favorite people is Ambar, singer, television personality, business woman, motivational speaker and someone who serves as an inspiration and role model for many women. Recently on a beautiful Miami evening before Valentine’s Day, a number of bloggers, media personalities and influencers were invited to celebrate this special day with Ambar and her great team. A big shout out to Bohemian Babushka, Miami Fashion Trends, Webcity Girls, LatinBlah and the ever present #305Chicas!

Ambar is a fascinating and multifaceted woman, a successful entrepreneur with a heart capable of embracing the whole world, and blessed with the grace to create, design, compose beautiful music and an exclusive line of luxury watches. In January she launched the weekly “Mujer No Pares de Bailar” motivational capsules on her YouTube channel: AmbarMusical, where she shares words of encouragement, wisdom and grace with her followers.

She was most recently nominated in the Female Artist of the Year Tropical category at Premios Lo Nuestro (Univision) for her recent album “Libre” produced by some of the best known personalities in the music industry such as Don Omar among others. She was also recognized as one of the best dressed on the magenta carpet!

Ambar spoiled us with a sumptuous Mediterranean spread, exquisite chocolates, champagne and capped off the evening by giving each one of us a signed watch from her luxury watch collection. Ambar’s motto is “Mujer: No Pares de Bailar,” translated, “Woman: Don’t Stop Dancing,” which she embodies and lives everyday of her life.

Thank you Ambar for being such a great friend to your followers and a Latina we can be proud of! Orgullo latino!

Shop Small Saturday, November 30, 2013

Today is Shop Small Saturday and Abuela de Miami is in full swing encouraging you to support small independent businesses in your community. You know, the small mom and pop shop down the street, the cute little boutique with the great window displays, the photographer that is just starting their business, the tiny cafeteria on the corner, the bakery that makes delicous pasteles, the tamaleria that’s across town, the catering company that prepares lechon and congris for the holidays, or like Abuela de Miami, the independent production companies that count on each project to keep their doors open.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) indicates America’s 28 million small businesses create two out of every three net new private sector jobs and are the backbone of our economy, with half of working Americans either owning or working for a small business. And of those 28 milliion small business over 3 million are Hispanic-owned according to a report released in September by the US U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Geoscape. Small Business Saturday is a nation-wide initiative held on the Saturday after Black Friday that brings Americans together to support small businesses, with the money you spend going right back into your local economy.

So there it is folks! Every time you buy your cafecito at the cafeteria on the corner, every time you shop at the local tiendita de mercado where the butcher knows your name, every time you take your kids to eat “una frita y un batido de mamey” you contribute to the economic growth of this nation and more importantly of your “comunidad.” And in honor of this important day, Buena Vida Media is offering 25% off of your video productions needs today! Send Abuela de Miami a message! Felices fiestas from Abuela de Miami!

Abuela de Miami spent a pleasant morning at the event hosted by Los Tweens and AIO Wireless: Parenting in the Age of Technology.

Christy Clavijo-Kish and Katherine Doble of Los Tweens along with Errol Flynn of AIO Wireless led a lively and interactive discussion over the cell phone use among children and some of the apps offered by AIO Wireless which help parents keep them safe such as MamaBear, which tracks your child’s location and monitors their Facebook feed for any signs of bullying or harsh language.

Abuela de Miami is very impressed that AIO has been proactive about developing apps that help parents safeguard their children when the time comes to get them a cell phone.

MIAMI AL MAXIMO Cocktail Launch Party!

In About on November 9, 2013 at 8:15 am

Abuela de Miami had a fabulous time at the Cocktail Launch Party for MIAMI AL MAXIMO. It was a beautiful, cool November evening with a slight breeze by the pool at The Room 316 bar located at the Euro Suites Hotel in Doral.

Everyone looked beautiful, especially the host of MIAMI AL MAXIMO, Aisha Duran. We had our cameras there and did some interviews which will air later this season. We have to give a shout out to our wonderful sponsors who support the work that we are doing to creat entertaining and inspirational television. First of all to the Euro Suites Hotel and their owners, managers and staff, THANK YOU! They have supported MIAMI AL MAXIMO from the beginning and opened up their beautiful hotel for us to film the majority of our interviews there, and were thrilled to have us do our launch party there as well on the rooftop at The Room 316 bar. I can’t say enough great things about them. It isn’t easy finding sponsors who will give you there support when you are starting out. That’s why Abuela de Miami says “don’t skip the commercials!”

We also had the sponsorship support of Florida Venture Foundation, LABA (Latin American Business Association), New York Life, Gadal Laboratories, Chick Fil A,for this event. We value these organizations and appreciate how they have caught the vision of what MIAMI AL MAXIMO looks to accomplish through the program. We hope to continue our partnership with them for a long time.

We’ve only just begun! Keep us in your prayers, especially this little Abuela de Miami, as we change the landscape of television for the better!<a href="https://abuelademiami.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/image11.jMexicanos en Miami always giving their support! pg”>NEW YORK LIFEGadal LaboratoriesFlorida Venture Foundation and LABA (Latin American Business Association)Euro Suites Hotel & The Room 316
